Diagnosed later in life, I understand

As a former TV presenter I started my career on Channel' 5’s The Wright Stuff, back in the day. Little did I know then that I had a speedy brain and was neurodivergent. I just knew that when the ‘On Air’ sign lit up, I got a huge surge of dopamine from being on live TV. Then having my own show as a BBC radio presenter, I got to talk to people, hear their stories and play my favourite tracks - a fantastic job for someone with ADHD.

Mum life

When I’m not talking on air, I am a mum to my two fab children. My daughter is 14 and diagnosed autistic, with ADHD and with dyspraxia. My son who is 11 is also diagnosed autistic, ADHD and with a host of anxieties. I am also wife to my long suffering autistic / ADHD husband Kelly (he has to put up with my very high word count!). Kelly is also my business partner at Perfectly Autistic and my body doubler (more of that if you have coaching sessions with me)! We are a truly neurodivergent family.

My speedy brain

I was diagnosed with ADHD later in life at 43, after both of the children were diagnosed. During their assessment with the psychiatrist she asked if I had ADHD. I had no idea that I might do! So I decided to look into it and was officially diagnosed a few months later.

I know what it’s like to look back at your life and think ‘what if?’ I had no idea that I masked. That I tried to be less ‘me’ to fit in. That I tried to talk less, or laugh quieter so I wasn’t too much for people. But now I prefer to look ahead to my future, having learnt what I can about my speedy brain. Most importantly, I am much kinder to myself now, knowing why I am the way I am.

Qualifications

As well as being a certified ADHD coach through ADHD Works, I also have an NCFE CACHS Level 2 certificate in Understanding Autism as well as plenty of lived and learned experience. I am also a speaker and neurodivergent consultant, working with TUI, Sony Music, Organix, HM Courts and Tribunals, the Greater London Authority and many more.

I am regularly asked to speak on both radio and to the press and have appeared on air everywhere from BBC Five Live to BBC Radio 4 and Women’s Radio.

As well as contributing to articles, blogs and podcasts, I am also a freelance writer and have written about parenting, autism and ADHD for The Huffington Post, The Mirror, iNews and more.

Meet Hester

I am passionate about helping people diagnosed later in life, to not look back, but to look forward.

That’s why Perfectly ADHD was launched.

When I’m not working, you can find me hanging with the family and our two mad cocker spaniels, shopping (online or in person - I’m happy either way), eating Jaffa cakes and watching trash TV and random documentaries.
